In the United States, you can legally own unlimited amounts of gold at home. No federal law caps the quantity of gold bars, coins, or jewelry a private citizen can hold. This differs from 1933 to 1974, when the government restricted private gold ownership.
Congress lifted those restrictions decades ago, and today you can buy, sell, and store as much gold as you want.
Keep a few practical points in mind. Insurance policies often cap coverage for precious metals unless you add a rider. If you sell gold for a profit, you must report capital gains to the IRS. Large cash purchases may also trigger reporting requirements for the dealer, though this affects the transaction, not your right to own the gold itself.
